Shockwave Therapy is a modality used for pain relief and mobility restoration. Shockwave therapy is non-invasive and does not involve the use of pain medication, which makes it a popular choice for those who are coping with chronic pain. The device emits low energy acoustic wave pulsations that are applied at the injury site through the patient’s skin via ultrasound gel. Shockwave therapy promotes accelerated tissue repair and cell growth, pain relief and mobility restoration.

When is Shockwave Therapy Used?

Shockwave therapy is recommended for individuals who have had a chronic musculoskeletal injury for six weeks or more and that hasn’t responded to other forms of treatment (i.e Ultrasound therapy, laser, acupuncture etc).

Are There Any Side Effects to Shockwave Therapy?

After treatment you may experience some mild, temporary soreness and swelling for a few days. This is due to the treatment causing an inflammatory response. This is your body’s natural response to healing itself. We ask the patient not to take any anti-inflammatories and avoid icing the area for 24 hours after treatment because this will slow recovery and impede the results of the treatment.

What Conditions does Shockwave Therapy Treat?

Shockwave therapy is used to treat musculoskeletal conditions, involving connective tissues such as tendon and ligaments. Shockwave Therapy can effectively treat the following conditions:

 Tennis and golfers elbow
Calcific tendinosis of the rotator cuff
 Patellar tendonitis
 Hip bursitis
 Shin splints
 Iliotibial band friction syndrome
 Heel spurs
 Plantar fasciitis
 Achilles tendonitis
Chronic muscular pain - low back, glutes and neck regions

Your First Shockwave Therapy Visit

The physiotherapist or chiropractor will asses you to determine if Shockwave Therapy is an option for treating your condition. The treating practitioner will educate you about your diagnosis and what you can do to help with recovery while receiving shockwave therapy. Some of the recommendations may include activity modification, exercises and posture changes. Shockwave treatment is normally done 1-2 times per week for up to 6 weeks depending on your condition. The treatment last up to 5 minutes each time and can cause mild discomfort but this can be adjusted to keep you comfortable.
