Electrotherapy machines are very popularly used in physiotherapy. The machine delivers electrical impulses to the body via pads placed on the body. The two most common kinds of electrotherapy is TENS (transcutaneous electrical neural stimulation) and Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES).

How Does Electrotherapy Work?

TENS is used to decrease pain by blocking pain signals from the injury site from reaching the brain. The stimulation also encourages the production of endorphins, which is a natural pain killer hormone produced by the body.

NMES- the electrical current is used to stimulate a muscle contraction where the pads are applied.

Is Electrotherapy Safe?

Electrotherapy is a very safe and non-invasive therapy treatment if used properly. The device only uses low level currents and is only applied to your tolerance. Contraindication for use are people with pace makers, epilespy, or poor sensation.

Benefits Of Electrotherapy

 Relaxation of muscle spasms
Prevention of muscle atrophy from injury, surgery and disuse
 Improved local blood flow
Re-education of muscles using targeted stimulation
Preserve and improve range of motion
Management and reduction of pain (chronic, post traumatic and post-surgical acute)
 Facilitation of wound healing

Electrotherapy is used in conjunction with physiotherapy in the clinic. We do have devices available for purchase for home use. It is recommended to consult with your physiotherapist on what type is best for you.
